In Fig. 1 pawl 3 is in the form of a plastic-coated leaf spring and pivoted to chain 2. Before plate 1 starts to move pawl 3 pulls lever 8 against stop 14, so that pin 13 on lever 8 lifts locking bar 7 to release plate 1 from the adjacent plate 1'. In other constructions pawl 3 is rigid the leaf springs are mounted on the plates. In Fig. 2 (not shown) leaf spring (15) opposes pivoting of rigid lever 8 until it engages stop (17) and lifts bar 7 as in Fig. 1. In Fig. 3 (not shown) bar 7 is replaced by a leaf spring (20) which opposes pivoting of lever 8 against stop (23). In Fig. 4 (not shown) a leaf spring (25) also acts as a locking bar. In Fig. 5 lever 8 is replaced by a leaf spring 28 having an extension 32 which normally holds locking bar leaf spring 31 down against its resilience. In Fig. 6 (not shown) lever 8 and locking bar 7 are both replaced by one integral leaf spring. In Fig. 7 pawl 3 engages curved leaf spring 40 depressing it so that lug 42' on the spring of the adjacent plate no longer engages in aperture 43 and plate 1 is free to move. In Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) pawl 3 engages and bends a pack of leaf springs round a curved stop (46) to progressively increase the force applied to plate 1, a locking bar (45) being lifted from engagement with the stop on the next plate. In Figs. 10 to 12 (not shown) pawl 3 engages members (50) pivoted on leaf spring packs (53) on the press plates. The initial rotation of the member (50) of the end plate moves lugs (57) out of engagement with fixed toothed bars (55, 56) which extend lengthwise of the press and normally hold all the plates. The end plate is then free to move and spring pack (53) inhibits the acceleration. A spring (59) holds member (50) with lugs (57) in the disengaged position until the plate has been moved into contact with plates previously moved and the next plate 1' moves into contact therewith, whereupon projection (61) on plate 1' releases member (50). |
