[Also in Division B1] In a casting mould a ceramic filter 5 for preventing slag being carried into the mould cavities during pouring is embedded in a foamed synthetic plastics material 6 at the exit from a gate or feeder 4 to cause an initial damming up during pouring to allow slag to separate-off. The synthetic material burns away and then allows the poured liquid metal to pass through the filter to fill the mould cavities. After the pouring has stopped the filter 5 rises to the surface and prevents rapid heat losses therefrom and promotes the feeding effect. The mould comprises an upper box 1, a lower box 2 and a core 3. The foamed synthetic plastics material 6 can be the pattern for forming the feeder 4 in the upper box 1.</p> |
