The universal coupling has a motor unit (200) attached to the valve so that it can drive the spindle (110) that rotates the valve head (100). The motor housing is perpendicular to the spindle, and houses a hollow drive shaft (211) that has internal splines parallel to the spindle. A cylindrical drive connector (300) has its outer surface splined to engage with the motor drive. The connector has an axial hole with a square cross-section to fit over the square profile of the spindle. The spindle projects above the top surface of the connector, allowing a spanner with a square hole that fits over the spindle to be fitted temporarily or permanently for manual operation of the valve.
