The reader has a circuit to receive supply energy and to erase a program held in non-permanent memory (3) when the power supply is interrupted. An interface (1,2,3,4) accepts a program from an external device (8) and stores it in non-permanent memory. The non-permanent memory does not have a back-up supply battery. The program stored in non-permanent memory is executed in a processor (1). The eraser receives (9) alternating current and transforms it into direct current to supply the non-permanent memory. If the supply is interrupted the stored program is lost from the non-permanent memory, and the program must be reloaded.
