Fuel is introduced into the exhaust pipe (2) upstream of the particle filter (4) during lean burn operation. Previously, an exhaust gas temperature is measured. Should this lie below a lower limit, it is raised to at least the limit. Electrical resistance heating is feasible. The heater is a metal body (6) with numbers of flow channels (7).
