The head is used with magnetic tape which has a number of close parallel tracks. A magneto-optical transducer (18) has a narrow straight gap (34') in a magnetic circuit and a continuous, preferably anisotropic, magnetic film (32) extending along the length of the straight gap. A beam of light (12), used to read the tape, is incident to the read head and very close to the linear gap (34'). The beam is modulated by the magnetic film and falls on a linear photo-sensitive detector so following of the tape tracks is made easier by the continuous film. Reading of the tracks is performed by the relative displacement of the detector with respect to the image projected by the beam of light on the detector without movement of the head with respect to the magnetic tape.
|
