<p>A hydrocarbon stream containing sulfur and sulfur compounds (18) is contacted with a water suspension of dolomitic lime and dibasic acid catalyst (13) in a reaction vessel (10) in order to transfer the sulfur and sulfur compounds from the petroleum vapor to the water phase. During sulfur removal, naphthenic acid present in the hot petroleum vapor is converted to a high quality naphtha fraction (21). In the water phase, the sulfur compounds react with the available alkalinity from the dolomitic lime and dibasic acid. The insoluble calcium or magnesium based reaction products can then be removed from the water phase through conventional solids concentrating and separating equipment.</p> |
