Cover of an air bag for a car has a sheet which is part of the instrument panel and which conceals the air bag. Break-up part of the panel has a fracture line to enable the cover sheet to break off easily and to allow the air bag to open out from its folded state and to be inflated, whilst another part attached to the panel covers at least the breakable part. This last part is pref. a styrene-based elastomer foam. Part (16) of the instrument panel on the front passenger side of a car is made of polypropylene, has an integral area (20), rectangular in shape, also made of the polymer and covering the air bag behind it. Area (20) has perforations (22) or other type of fracture points all round its periphery. If the air bag is activated and exerts a pressure outwards, this breaks off the area (20) along its perforations (22). Outer side of the area (20) has a covering (24) of polystyrene foam attached by a hot melt adhesive. Rim (24A) of this foam covers over the perforations i.e. hides them from view. ADVANTAGE - Cover does not spoil the appearance of the panel whilst, at the same time, it does not impair the efficiency of the air bag system. (Dwg. 1/7)
