PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element of a transverse direction electric field driving system which obviates the deterioration and destruction of an element in spite of execution of rubbing, has an excellent visual angle characteristic and can be driven by a low voltage and a process for producing the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has a pair of substrates 1, 4 facing each other and a liquid crystal layer held between a pair of these substrates 1, 4. Display is executed by impressing the electric field of the direction substantially parallel with the planes of the substrates 1, 4 on the liquid crystals, thereby changing the arranging state of the liquid crystal molecules 10 in the direction horizontal with the planes of the substrates 1, 4. The element has the oriented structure which is not subjected to a positive orientation treatment at the boundary between one of a pair of the substrates 1, 4 and the liquid crystals and is subjected to the positive orientation treatment at the boundary between the other of a pair of the substrates 1, 4 and the liquid crystals. |
