The structure has a rigid frame (1) with one end fixed (10) to a part of the bodywork (8) of the vehicle adjacent to the driver's door (9). Its transverse section (7) carries the steering column (2), while its longitudinal section (11) supports the mountings (3,5) of the gear lever (4) and handbrake (6) away from the floor (12). The transverse and longitudinal sections are joined by a curve (13) secured to a longitudinal tunnel (14) on the floor by a rigid upright (15). The third fixing point is on the floor alongside the driving-seat (19) and near that (20) of the seat-belt attachment (21).
