An industrial sewing machine with an oscillating needle holder carrying a first thread has a system to give a light pre-tension to the thread. Loop formers below the sewing plate supply a second thread and cooperate with the needle to form a stitch. The thread tensioner is synchronised with the needle drive so that the tension is eased just before the needle reaches its lowest position.
