The device detects defects during the rotation of the tyre about its axis using at least one magnetic field sensor (5,6). The radial position of the sensor is selected in dependence on the tyre diameter. The axial distance of the sensor from the tyre sidewall can be adjusted and rotation of the tyre controlled, with evaluation of the sensor magnetic-field-strength signals.
