FIELD: genetics, experimental medicine. SUBSTANCE: female and male rats (strain Wistar) showing the most sensitivity to galactose were selected and mated. The rate of cataract development on diet with 40-50% galactose is used as index of sensitivity to galactose. Then close inbreeding of animals showing the most sensitivity to galactose is carried out up to 13-th generation; inbreeding is carried out up to 4-th generation at galactose loading, and from 5-th to 13-th generation - without galactose loading. Method ensures to obtain highly reproducible strain of S-rats with the hereditary free radical hyperproduction that is a model for free-radical states study and testing new antioxidant preparations.
