Disclosed is a binder for magnetic recording media. The binder comprises a sulfobetaine-containing resin. The resin has a good affinity for magnetic powders. Therefore, by using the resin as a binder, good dispersion of superfine magnetic powders or large amount of magnetization is attained. The sulfobetainecontaining resin is for example polyurethane resin, polyester resin, vinyl chloride copolymer, vinylidene chloride copolymer, acrylic resin, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer or styrenebutadiene copolymer.
