PURPOSE: To realize the optical relay transmitter and the optical communication method in which multiple waves are simultaneously amplified to compensate a transmission loss in a way that the gain of each wavelength is almost constant independently of an input signal optical level in the wavelength multiplex transmission of the optical signal. CONSTITUTION: The optical relay transmitter is made up of a transmission terminal station 16 converting four information signals into four optical signals and applying wavelength multiplex to the optical signals, an optical fiber transmission line 17 used to transmit the optical signals, a reception terminal station 25 demultiplexing the received optical signal into four optical signals and converting them into four information signals, and an optical relay amplifier 30 arranged on the way of the optical fiber transmission line 17 and in which plural optical fiber amplifiers whose wavelength dependence of amplification gain differs are connected in series. The optical relay amplifier 30 is made up of an Al 1.4wt.% addition EDF31a, a P5wt.%-ALL1wt.% addition EDF31b connected in series with the EDF31a and exciting devices 34a, 34b supplying the exciting light to the EDFs31a, 31b. |
