The release mechanism (1) is connected through an adaptor (11) with a workpiece locating mechanism (12) running in bearings on the headstock (13) of the machine. The release mechanism (1) has a group of three axially deployed cylinders (2) acting on a piston rod (3). The piston rod (3) has a collar (10) on which a further piston (7) in a cylinder (9) can act. In addition to the action of the group of three cylinders (2), the further piston (7) delivers a controlled impact to the piston rod (3). This is transmitted to the workpiece and workpiece holder (17) to break bonds developed during machining.
