The invention relates to an undulator or wiggler, i.e., a device generating a sequence of transverse magnetic fields along the path of an electron beam and allowing, in a free-electron laser, the direct conversion of a portion of the energy of a beam of relativistic electrons into light energy. The undulator comprises a magnetizing circuit constituted by an electrical conductor which forms meanders along the path of the electron beam and in which a high excitation current flows, and a cooling system that evacuates the thermal energy dissipated by the excitation current in the meanders of the electrical conductor. Advantageously, the electrical conductor with meanders is made up of two superposed parts (210 and 211) forming meanders with a pi -shaped rectangular contour, and the cooling system is formed by an array of pipes with a flowing fluid. <IMAGE>
