The engine, with valves in the cylinder-head, has one or more pistons driving a crankshaft. Between the wall (21.1) of each cylinder and the piston (13) is a liner (22.1) slid to and fro in its axial direction by a drive mechanism (23). The latter is so coupled to the crankshaft (16) that the liner moves at least nearly in synchronism with the piston but over a shorter stroke. Where the top end of the liner extends above the bottom face (24) of the cylinder head, there can be piston rings (27.2) on the inside, forming a sealing joint with a cylindrical face (26.2) on the head. USE/ADVANTAGE - Combines advantages of long-stroke engine, particularly better fuel consumption, with those of short-stroke one, particularly mechanical loading of piston and cylinder wall.
