PURPOSE:To reduce the fear to omit the texture (pattern) information by the selecting state of the (m) value in such a conventional case where an original density image is divided into the rectangular areas of (mXm) picture elements when the texture areas of a gradation image having plural textures are roughly divided, a single picture element is sampled at a prescribed position of the rectangular area for production of a reduced image which is further divided into smaller rectangular areas of (nXn) picture elements, and the density histograms of the adjacent smaller rectangular areas are compared with each other for integration or separation of these rectangular areas. CONSTITUTION:An average density value calculting part 3 calculates the average density value of (mXm) picture elements of a rectangular area of an original image. A reduced image is produced with use of the picture elements having the calculated average density value and via an image reducing part 4 and then stored in a storage part 5. Then the accumulated density histograms of the adjacent areas of (nXn) picture elements included in the reduced image are produced via a production/comparison part 6 and compared with each other. Thus these adjacent areas are integrated together or separated from each other, and the results of these integration and separation are stored in a storage part 7. |
