A golf club head having, on the outside thereof, a lower ground-engaging portion forming the sole (2), a substantially planar forward portion forming the striking surface (3), and a rear portion forming the body (4). Said head comprises an internal cavity (5) which is at least partially defined by the walls of a steel shell (6) in said lower rear portion, and said striking surface (3) consists, at least in the striking area, of a fibre-based composite material having a modulus of elasticity of at least 230 Gpa.
