Dimerisation of olefins containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, for which a catalyst containing alumina, nickel and sulphate ions in such proportions that the atomic ratio sulphur/nickel is lower than 1 is employed, the preparation of the said catalyst comprising a stage of heating in a nonreducing atmosphere.
