<p>A multilaminate material for separating electrodes of opposite polarity in cells and battery assemblies has at least one layer of flexible, microporous retaining mat (11) bonded to at least one layer of semi-rigid, porous support material (12), and a microporous separator (13). A unitary multilaminate separator assembly (20) is formed by sealing at least two opposite peripheral edges (22) of two aligned sheets of multilaminate separator material to provide an electrode receiving slot (18). The separator assemblies allow continuous automated battery assembly in an efficient and safe manner.</p> |
