A description is given of 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl hydrocarbyl sulphide and polysulphide compounds, of their preparation and of their use especially as antioxidising additives. These compounds correspond to the general formula: <IMAGE> in which R1 and R2, which are identical or different, are alkyl groups containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R3 is an alkyl group containing 1-20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 5-12 carbon atoms, a phenyl or naphthyl group, optionally substituted by one or a number of alkyl groups containing 1-20 carbon atoms, or an alkylaryl group containing 7-20 carbon atoms, and n is a number from 1 to 5. They can be prepared by reacting a 4-halo-2,6-dialkylphenol with an alkali metal mercaptate or mercaptate-polysulphide. They are used as antioxidising additives in organic compounds, for example oils or certain polymers.
