<p>A front frame assembly for a semitrailer comprises essentially an aluminum weldment, except for a steel bumper which is riveted to it. The front frame assembly includes an upper coupler assembly fabricated from an aluminum extrusion with a planar base and first and second pairs of parallel flanges which extend generally perpendicularly from tile base. A pair of U-shaped aluminum channels are welded to the flanges to form a pair of hollow beams with generally rectangular cross-sections and a third U-shaped channel is welded between the other two channels. All of the major welds of the upper coupler assembly are located substantially along or toward the neutral bending axis of the upper coupler assembly to minimize bending stress to the welds.</p> |
