The invention relates to a locking device, of which the locking shaft (5) cooperating with the bolt (32) is blocked by a blocking plate (2) mounted so as to be displaceable perpendicularly to the locking shaft (5). In the blocked state, the blocking plate (2) engages with its blocking extension (3) into a recess (4) of the locking shaft (5) under the effect of the spring (34). With its lower edge, the blocking plate (2) butts against detent elements (7) or against special attachments arranged adjustably on them and is thus held in the blocking position. The detent elements (7) are provided with clearances or perforations which are brought into correspondance with the lower edge of the blocking plate (2) as a result of the displacement of the detent elements (7) by respective specific amounts corresponding to the secret code, so that the blocking plate (2) can shift downwards and releases the locking shaft (5). The correctly positioned displacement of the detent elements (7) takes place by means of a locking card having projections protruding with correspondingly correct length. The secret code can easily be set and changed by the authorised person. The key designed as a flat locking card can easily be stored and, for example, carried in the briefcase or the like. <IMAGE>
