In a dry end, the drying cylinders are arranged in two superposed rows. The web is passed in a meandering manner over the drying cylinders of both rows, with the aid of endless drying fabrics associated with each row. The drying cylinders are here located on the outside of the drying fabrics. Guide rollers located on the inside of the fabrics are arranged in pairs between the drying cylinder rows in such a way that they guide the web with long free sections being avoided. The drives of the drying cylinder rows of each group are mechanically separate from one another and fitted with a wheel gear and a drive motor for each row. The housings of the wheel gears of each row of drying cylinders are directly connected to one another and designed as a load-bearing element for the cylinder mounting. The housings of both drying cylinder rows are also connected to one another via supports. This makes it possible to arrange the guide rollers between the drying cylinder rows without impeding elements of the cylinder drive on the driving side of the dry end.
