PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance, by reacting a tocopherol containing at least one of beta-, gamma and delta-tocopherol with formaldehyde or polymer thereof in the presence of an organic acid ammonium salt and catalytically reducing the resultant reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A tocopherol containing at least one beta-, gamma and delta-tocopherol is reacted with formaldehyde or polymer thereof, preferably paraformaldehyde in the presence of an organic acid ammonium salt, e.g. ammonium formate or ammonium benzoate, in an amount of 1-2mol based on 1mol raw material at 80-130 deg.C and solid materials in the reaction product are then removed. The resultant product is further catalytically reduced in the presence of a Pd-C catalyst, etc., under 10-20kg/cm<2> initial pressure at 90-130 deg.C for 2-4hr to afford the aimed alpha-tocopherol. EFFECT:The aimed substance can be obtained in good yield under mild condition.
