The invention relates to a scanner having a horizontally arranged picture carrier, a camera arranged above the picture carrier, an illumination arranged underneath the picture carrier and comprising drives for relative-horizontal displacement between camera, illumination and picture carrier in two axes extending perpendicularly to one another. It is considered to be novel that camera and illumination are mounted on a common carrier and can be jointly displaced with respect to this carrier on first horizontal guides via a first drive whilst the said carrier exhibits a penetration for the picture carrier, which is arranged to be stationary, and can be displaced on second horizontal guides, which extend perpendicularly to the first guides, via a second drive.
