A device by means of which the diameter of a rod (8) for a nuclear reactor fuel element can be determined with high accuracy, has a guide member (6), which is mounted on a retaining member (2), is provided with a guide channel (7) for the rod (8), can be pivoted about two pivoting axes which are at right angles to one another and to the longitudinal direction of the guide channel (7), and which has bearing members (15; 16), which are elastically springy in the radial direction on the wall of the guide channel (7), for the rod (8) as well as, in a cross-section of the guide channel (7), a first measuring knife edge (22), which can be displaced against a restoring spring (33) in the direction of a measuring diameter and is operationally connected mechanically with the armature (29) of an electrical position sensor, and a second measuring knife edge (23) which is held in an elastically springy fashion in the direction of the measuring diameter. <IMAGE>
