PURPOSE:To shorten an integrating time by successively calculating a product of the first data and the second data and a product of the third data and the fourth data respectively in parallel, adding both multiplication results and successively integrating (accumulating totals) and storing. CONSTITUTION:The multilication of the picture element data A1... of a character pattern 1a supplied synchronously with a clock signal from a control section and the picture element data B1... corresponding to the respective picture elements of the character pattern 1a in the first reference pattern 10a is carried out by multipliers 11, 12 in parallel and the multiplication result is added by an adder 15. Then, by an adder 17, an added result supplied from the adder 15 and an accumulating result supplied from a latch circuit 19 by the clock signal are added. In the latch circuit 19, an integrating result is successively renewed and stored, a total sum to all the picture element data is calculated and outputted to a judging section as a similarity. Thus, since the multiplication of the respective picture element data of the character pattern and the corresponding picture element data in the reference pattern is calculated by two picture elements in parallel, the similarity to the reference pattern can be obtained at high speed.
