A method is proposed which serves to debit charge units (GE1...) stored in an electronic charge memory (GSP1). The debiting is carried out with each charge pulse (GI1...) arriving in an electronic control device. In order to simplify the exchange of a used charge memory (GSP1) for an unused charge memory (GSP2), the control device transfers all the charge units (GE4...GE6) still present in the charge memory to a buffer memory at a specific time (TV) before the end of the last time period (TZn). With each further incoming charge pulse (GI4...), all temporarily stored charge units (GE4...) are then debited consecutively. Automatic disconnection (Z) or, if a new charge memory has been inserted in the control device within the time (TV), the debiting of the charge units of this charge memory takes place only when all the temporarily stored charge units are used up. <IMAGE>
