In a muscle-building device having a hydraulically operating piston/cylinder arrangement, in which the piston rod is connected to a handle via a transmission system and in which the cylinder is connected at at least one of its ends to an inlet and outlet pipe for a liquid medium, the liquid medium is subjected in a closed system of pipes to compressed air in such a way that the liquid medium presses the piston into an end position when the handle is released. The system of pipes which is filled with the liquid medium is connected to an equalising container for the compressed air and the cylinder has an opening for air from the atmosphere at its end facing away from the inlet and outlet pipe. When the piston is positioned at the end of the cylinder to which the inlet and outlet pipe is connected, the liquid medium which is acted upon by the compressed air is poured into an ascending pipe section which is connected to the equalising container in a quantity which is larger than the quantity of the liquid medium inside the cylinder when the piston is in the opposite position.
