For an automatic gambling machine comprising a symbol gambling device (1) controlled by a random-number generator (4) and a control device (3), which displays a symbol combination deciding on winning or losing before the end of the game, with a processor (5) which determines a winning signal representing the magnitude of the win differentiated into steps from the random number, by means of which signal the control device (3) activates one of a number of winnings-oriented display elements (for example 8), the latter being combined to form a winnings display ladder (9) in strictly monotonic winnings sequence, it is proposed that the processor (5) transforms equally-distributed random numbers into random numbers of predetermined distribution in order to decide on an increase of the gained winnings to the next-higher winnings step in accordance with the predetermined distribution. The automatic gambling machine according to the invention enables the gained winnings to be increased, as a result of which, on the one hand, the gambler does not suffer any losses and, on the other hand, the associated increase in payout remains within a calculable and economically supportable frame. <IMAGE>
