A combined warp and weft knitted fabric is produced on a circular knitting machine where the warp yarn guides are disposed in relation to the needles in such a way that it is possible to use sinker plates to hold down the knitted fabric without complication to the construction of the machine, or reduction in its output. The ring of locks for the warp yarn guides is fitted on the side where the needles are situated, but higher than the needles in the raised 'knit' position, and above the ring of sinker plates. Such a disposition of the locking ring or warp yarn guides allows existing single bed circular knitting machines to be adapted for knitting warp and wedt yarns together; moreover, the control of the sinker plate locks and the warp yarn guide locks may be common to both system.
