Austenitic manganese steel characterised by the addition of sufficient carbide forming elements to promote the retention of austenite during cooling from solution treatment, produce a dispersion of undissolved primary carbides in the austenite matrix and retard decomposition of the retained austenite when the steel is reheated. Steels containing, by weight percent, 0.6-2.5 C, 10-17 Mn and 4-10 Cr (possibly with Ni), Mo or Ti are exemplified.
|
