The invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing an antibiotic and a muramyl peptide of the formula I or a salt thereof, to a process for their preparation, and to a process for activating the antibiotic activity of antibiotics. In formula I, X denotes carbonyl or carbonyloxy, R1 denotes optionally substituted alkyl or aryl, R2, R3, R4 and R6 denote hydrogen or lower alkyl, R5 denotes hydrogen, optionally substituted lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or nitrogen-containing heterocyclyl, or R4 and R5 together also denote C3-C4-alkylene, R7 denotes hydrogen or free, esterified or amidated carboxyl, one of the radicals A1 and A2 denotes a radical of the formula II and the other of the radicals A1 and A2 denotes optionally substituted or functionally modified hydroxyl or amino.
