In summary, the invention provides the following: a circuit for compensating for the frequency characteristic of the microphone output variable, the arrangement being made in such a manner that a combination of a microphone element of the pressure-gradient type of construction with a proximity effect, represented by a rise in its low-frequency range sensitivity when the microphone element closely approaches a sound source, with another microphone element is provided, the latter microphone element belonging to the pressure type of construction and does not develop a proximity effect in order to cancel in this manner the occurrence of the proximity effect. An increment of the sensitivity of the pressure-gradient microphone in the lower frequency range due to the proximity effect is determined from the level difference between the output variables of these two microphones, and this increment is subtracted from the output variable of the pressure-gradient microphone in order to provide by this means a compensation for the proximity effect in the output variable of the pressure-gradient microphone.
