A separator for treating the mixt. of oil and water cleared from the sea with a vessel after tanker accidents etc. consists of two tanks adjacent each other, one large and one small. The mixt. enters the large tank at its roof centre and travels in a helical path formed by a partition extending from floor to roof inside that tank. At the end of this path the mixt. enters the smaller tank tangentially via a vertical slot. The water is extracted through a valved aperture in the floor of the smaller tank, while the oil risen to the surface is extruded by two or more pumps carried on a floating platform centralised by a vertical pillar on the central axis of the smaller tank. A large sepn. capacity is provided within a limited space, and the action is only slightly affected by pitching and rolling of the vessel.
|
