Aldehydes are converted to a trihalohydroxyl compound by reacting them with a haloform, CHX3, wherein X is chosen from fluorine, bromine, chlorine and iodine and a catalytic amount of a trihaloacetate CX3COOM, wherein X is chosen from bromine and chlorine and wherein M is alkali, e.g. Na or K.
