A blast furnace comprises a brick lining of uniform thickness throughout the shaft, the belly and the bosh supported in the region of the belly by internal metal plates 24 attached to the unitary shell 23, a plurality of built-up support members 26 welded to said shell and columns 27 bearing said members 26. Alternatively, the support members may be suspended by slings, e.g. links. The brick lining is cooled by cooling plates arranged with their tips uniformly distant from the inner surface of the walls. The hearth may be lined with carbon blocks. |
