An arrangement for selecting in a multistore blast furnace installation, the hottest of a plurality of stoves comprises means 23 sensing the temperatures of the stoves and generating an electrical signal indicative of the temperature of each stove, means (such as a detecting relay 26, Fig. 3) for comparing the signals and producing an output signal indicative of the hottest of the stoves, and means (such as a selective relay SR-I, II, or III, Fig. 3) responsive to the output signal for establishing as the stove next to go ON BLAST the stove whose temperature produced the output signal. In an arrangement described for three or more stoves, the signals from a first plurality (less than the total number of stoves) are first compared; then the hottest of these is compared with the remainder; and finally the hottest of these latter is selected as the stove to go ON BLAST In the three-stove arrangement shown, 10 is the blast furnace bustle pipe and I, II and III are the stoves. A temperature sensing device 22 in the hot blast main 17 maintains a preselected temperature of blast passing to the furnace, by regulation of the cold blast throttling valve CBTV to the stoves and a mixer valve MTV in a stove-by-pass line 15. When the stove in use is at its hottest the throttling valve CBTV is only partially open and the mixer valve MTV is fully open. As this stove becomes cooler the throttling valve is gradually opened to its fully open position and thereafter the mixer valve begins to close until substantially all of the blast air is passed through the stove via main 13. Ultimate closure of the mixing valve MTV closes contacts (25, see Fig. 3) on said valve and initiates the selection sequence to bring another stove into use whilst the former stove is put into the ON GAS condition for reheating. The selection circuit (24) remains energized until reopening of the mixer valve MTV and consequent opening of the selection initiating switch (25). A conventional snort valve is provided as shown to relieve the pressure of the blast entering the furnace if an emergency occurs in the furnace.
