Novel compounds of the formula I <IMAGE> in which X = -CH= if Y = O or S, X = -N= if Y = N-lower alkyl or S, n = 0 or 1 and R1 represents an N-lower alkyl-N-adamantylamino radical or a 4-substituted piperazin-1-yl radical in which the 4-substituent denotes formyl, lower hydroxyalkyl, lower alkyl, phenyl which is optionally mono- or polysubstituted by halogen, lower hydroxyalkyl or lower alkyl or denotes the radical to which R1 is bonded in formula I. They are prepared by reaction of the appropriate 4-unsubstituted 4H-1,2,4-triazoles with formaldehyde and either with appropriate N-alkyl-N-adamantylamines or with appropriate 4-substituted piperazines or with piperazine itself. The compounds have an inhibitory action against bacteria and against protozoa, in particular against amoebae, trichomonads and coccidia.
