A rocker arm (3) carries a pin with a ball and socket connection to the valve rod (1). The pin screws (4) into the rocker arm and the valve clearance can be adjusted by rotation of the screw. The screw (4) has a toothed wheel (5) attached to it. A spring clip (7) is attached to the rocker arm and has a downturn at its end with a plate (6) which slips between adjacent teeth of the wheel (5). This locks the wheel, and with it the screw. When the clearance is to be altered it is only necessary to lift the spring clip to release the screw.
