PURPOSE:To obtain a glass body having an adjustable refractive index distribution by repeating such processes as filling of a stuffing agent into the connecting pores of a porous glass body, partial dissolution removal thereof, fixing thereof by thermal decomposition, etc. to perform multiple doping. CONSTITUTION:A porous glass body having a porosity of about 50%, connecting pores of about 70Angstrom diameter and a silica content of about 95% or more is dipped in a soln. of nitrate of an element providing a higher refractive index than silica when vitrified, thereby filling (stuffing) the nitrate into the pores. The body is dipped in an aq. soln. to dissolution-remove (unstuff) part of the nitrate, and it is dipped in ethanol, vacuum dried, and heated to about 600 deg.C to fix the nitrate in the pores by thermal decomposition. The heated body is then cooled to room temp. Such operations as stuffing, unstuffing and fixing are repeated by desired times to perform multiple doping, and the resulting body is collapsed at about 900 deg.C to seal the residual pores, thus being perfectly converted into glass. |
