Mannitol-rich aqueous solutions of sorbitol and mannitol containing about 40-45% mannitol on the dry basis are prepared by epimerizing glucose in aqueous solution to obtain an epimerizate containing approximately 30% mannose and 70% glucose on the dry basis, and then hydrogenating this mixture of mannose and glucose in an alkaline solution at low temperatures (about 60-100 DEG C.). Solid crystalline mannitol can be recovered from this aqueous solution by known crystallization methods. |
