The valve has a stem (19) which is moved against the bias of a spring (23) when the valve is opened by a biting action of an animal. The valve has a body (12) and a member (127) which engage between the animal's teeth to open the valve. The member (127) can turn freely about the longitudinal axis of the valve stem. The body has a flange (13) which is engaged by a union nut (14), to connect the valve to a water supply. The body (112) and member (127) are made in a material which is resilient to wear by the animal's teeth.
