The cutting drum for long wall mining machine has a circular sectioned hollow body with one or more helical formations (17) extending around its outer surface from front to rear. Peripheral edges of the helical formation are provided with fasteners to receive cutting tools (22). Each spiral channel between adjacent turns of the helical formation increases in radial depth from one end of the body to the other, i.e. from front to back or from back to front. Water may be fed to passages passing radially through the helical formation by passages on the inner surface of the body following the line of the helical formation.
