Each frame has one letter, and frame consists of a rectangular base slab (2) which contains the female imprint of the relevant letter. The edge of the base carries two hinge blocks (5) which are mounted on pillars that are inserted in the base. The blocks carry a hinge pin which also passes through the lid (1). The lid (1) carries the male part of the letter stamping (3). There is a clearance between the edges of the letter stampings (3, 4) to allow for the metal thickness. The hinge pillars allow the lid to move vertically so that the letter print is even.
