A cosmetic composition suitable for use as an anticellulitic or slimming agent which comprises, as active ingredient, at least one 1-hydroxyalkylxanthine of formula:

R1 is a C2-C5 ???-hydroxy-n-alkyl or C3-C5 (???-1) hydroxy-n-alkyl group;
R2 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group; and
R2 is a C1-C4 alkyl group, the number of carbon atoms in R1+R3 being from 4 to 9], or a salt thereof, in a cosmetically acceptable carrier and compounds of formula (I) per se.
