An electrolyte for the preparation of organic lead compounds using a lead anode comprises a substantially anhydrous solution of at least one Grignard reagent in a solvent comprising a mixture of a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon and at least one liquid diether of a polyallsylene glycol.
